There are three main types of Zirconia have developed and made available for use in general dentistry. Although they are chemically identical, each one has slightly different physical properties, ie. porosity, density, purity, strength. There is the fully sintered or HIP (“Hot Isostatic Pressing”) type of zirconia. Hot Isostatic Pressing is a sintering technique used in utilizing high temperatures and pressures to optimize and intensify the density of the Zirconia.  Another type is a partially sintered Zirconia, and the last type is a non-sintered or “green state” Zirconia. Because the manufacturing and fabricating processes are so similar, the last two types are often lumped together (partially sintered or non-HIP Zirconia). Blocks of these types of material s are created in a using a spray-dried Zirconia powder that is then isostatically pressed and incompletely sintered.  These materials are softer in comparison with the HIP Zirconia and are therefore easier to mill. After milling, the Zirconia is then sintered completely in a furnace to establish its final shape, strength, and physical properties. Some examples of this type are Lava (3M ESPE), Cercon (DENTSPLY Ceramco), and Vita YZ (Vident).
